Medea (play) - Wikipedia

Respected poet, teacher, and critic Alan Shapiro continues his much-acclaimed explorations of childhood, family, and marriage in Mixed Company. Revealing a world troubled by difference while struggling toward commonality, and with equal attention to historical detail and the poetics of everyday life, from the mythic past to the abrasive intimacies of the present, Shapiro charts the many ways our social and sexual identities are formed, threatened, altered, and, for good or ill, preserved.

Deeply felt and ambitious, Mixed Company is an extraordinary book by one of the leading poets writing in America today. The poems grope and conjecture, looking for understanding. The author of the National Book Critics Award finalist Old War presents a latest collection of poetry in which he uses surreal, dreamlike language to meditate on the nighttime realities of such public areas as a gas station restroom, a shoe store and a racetrack, in a volume that also explores the historical and personal events that marked his childhood.

A collection of poems centered around the dissolution of a marriage probes the territory of recovery, loss, and healing in the aftermath of failed relationships, probing jealousy, romance, and lust, among other pertinent topics. Based on the conviction that only translators who write poetry themselves can properly re-create the celebrated and timeless tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, the Greek Tragedy in New Translations series offers new translations that go beyond the literal meaning of the Greek in order to evoke the poetry of the originals.

The volume brings together four major works by one of the great classical dramatists: Prometheus Bound, translated by James Scully and C. John Herrington, a haunting depiction of the most famous of Olympian punishments; The Suppliants, translated by Peter Burian, an extraordinary drama of flight and rescue arising from women's resistance to marriage; Persians, translated by Janet Lembke and C.

John Herington, a masterful telling of the Persian Wars from the view of the defeated; and Seven Against Thebes, translated by Anthony Hecht and Helen Bacon, a richly symbolic play about the feuding sons of Oedipus. These four tragedies were originally available as single volumes. This new volume retains the informative introductions and explanatory notes of the original editions and adds a single combined glossary and Greek line numbers.

The volume collects Euripides' Electra, an exciting story of vengence that counterposes suspense and horror with comic realism; Orestes, the tragedy of a young man who kills his mother to avenge her murder of his father; Iphigenia in Tauris, a delicately written and beautifully contrived Euripidean "romance"; and Iphigenia at Aulis, a compelling look at the devastating consequence of "man's inhumanity to man.
